Global Graduate Induction

OVERVIEW

HSBC’s Global Graduate Induction marks the beginning of a two-year programme for 864 graduates from around the world and Broadsword have been privileged to work alongside organisers for the past four years, since the event’s inception.

Building on previous years, we were tasked to design an authentic event in London’s ExCel, that would energise, equip and inspire attendees, creating a strong sense of community and a personalised experience for all. We developed an interactive and dynamic environment, transforming the venue to include an energised main plenary, micro group booths, an expo, networking/reflection areas and an outdoor space for evening events.

The environment

Our talented creative team engaged with HSBC’s brand and designed a consistent look and feel across the entire event within the ICC Auditorium, Capital Hall and installed an outdoor marquee for evening activities. We took ownership of the event’s identity and personality which we adapted for on screen content, slide design, branding throughout the venue and digital signage.

Our environment design featured multiple zones, with large format print, ambient lighting and layered, textured furniture and accessory finishes to create rooms within rooms, facilitating collaborative learning and networking.

Overall, we created a home at ExCel, a memorable and professional experience for the graduates and an opportunity for them to begin building effective relationships with each other, with senior leaders and with the wider organisation.

Appealing to a younger, global audience

It was important that the event environment was flexible and could be adapted to allow for immersive participant interactivity. Our solution incorporated various seating set ups for hands-on activities in the main plenary, wireless audio headsets for silent break-out sessions and micro group booths for focused facilitation sessions.

Braving the British summer weather, the evening entertainment was outside, on the dockside under a large high-top marquee, with entertainment over the event including a live band, DJs, BBQ and food trucks serving an international cuisine appealing to this young global audience. Britain was of course traditionally British, meaning our wet weather contingency items - blankets and umbrellas – ended up being required, but we later donated to a charity post event.

The Main Plenary

Graduates entered the main plenary to crowd sourced videos consolidated into a montage, with bright lights, music and a high-energy welcome from MCs. The audience were seated ‘in-the-round’ surrounded by an impressive array of flown images and digital surfaces, with a central lozenge-shaped stage.

We created a stunning lighting design to complement the activities in the room and maintain an intimate feel and installed an extensive camera system. This was used for live relay and along with roving cameras, we captured all aspects of the delegate experience to produce a highlights film.

The icing on the cake was a mammoth puzzle of puzzles, which marked the culmination of the Induction at the end of Day Three. With a bird’s eye view above the stage, we captured the pieces being put together, which was such a brilliant way to visualise the community that had been created and celebrate each individual’s success.

Reflecting on 2019 and specifically on what an amazing event we all put together. The delegate feedback speaks for itself, which shows what a strong and well thought out event it was. From my perspective, we simply could not run this event without Broadsword.  The unity of my team and Broadsword in the pre-planning is the strongest I’ve seen for any event.  We all simply work as one team with one goal – to deliver something which makes us all proud.

Nothing asked was a big deal to you, and I know at times we asked a lot.  We pushed deadlines, had last minute and difficult to execute ideas, yet everything was executed and delivered on time. Ideas became reality time and time again. The creative and branding was strong, full of impact and all on brand. The delivery of any event once you get to site can be nail biting and GGI was no exception. But once again, everything was executed flawlessly and with good humour and smiles all round.

So, THANK YOU.  It really was an awesome event and something for all who were involved to be proud of.”
