We are absolutely thrilled to have picked up a silver for Best Awards Event Production at the Awards Awards.
Broadsword’s entry was based on BIFA – the British Independent Film Awards. Each December, Awards Season, Christmas and the British Independent Film Industry merge to provide us with a perfect storm of an event. The stars literally align on the red carpet at Old Billingsgate for a glittering celebration of British film where you don’t need a Hollywood budget to find yourself sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in movies.
The British Independent Film Awards are 21 years old and Broadsword have been privileged to be their technical partner since 2009. Broadsword work closely with organisers GSP Events as their main technical adviser and our job is to make the nominees, presenters and winners look and sound as great as possible. Managing the playback of film clips is a particular challenge given that the room is full of established filmmakers who know exactly how their work should look and sound, so there’s no margin for error here.
Leading up to the 2018 Awards, we were tasked to film, capture and live stream a series of related events. In early November, the Nominations were announced live to press, industry and publicists via the live stream. Social media coverage of the announcement reached one million people. Press coverage of the announcement reached an estimated 987 million. The Nominees Party was hosted at Soho House and was followed with the Craft Winner Announcement direct to social media, celebrating the creative teams behind the nominated films.
The short, sharp and funny Awards Show was hosted by Russell Tovey. Our staging design sat perfectly within the original features of Old Billingsgate with illuminated spheres and vintage movie set lanterns that mimicked the BIFA branding and CNC cut logo, as well as the on-screen content that we created to mark the different categories. We enhanced the in-house stage with an angled set of steps and LED edging; this made for a really impactful entrance as the stars walked up to accept their awards.
Key moments included the host’s opening monologue, award presentations and acceptance speeches from stars such as Olivia Colman, Martin Freeman and Dame Judi Dench.
The Awards Awards took place on Friday 17th May at etc.venues 133 Houndsditch. The afternoon was an opportunity to celebrate all things Awards and was hosted by Rory Bremner, with further entertainment from Jess Robinson.
